OVERVIEW:
Suddenly “artificial intelligence” (AI) has become a very scary phrase to many people. Terry Gray is teaching an online class that will cut through the myths and fears of artificial intelligence and get to the facts and the reality.
Artificial Intelligence continues to make news. Terry will discuss developments that made headlines, reflect on where we are in the “hype cycle,” and whether “boomers” (favoring rapid AI development) or the “doomers” (hoping to slow it down) are winning. The focus will be on the social impact of AI, looking at societal trust and freedom as well as impact on business and employment, creativity, personal autonomy, and institutions.
Each of the three sessions is 90 minutes and will include time for Q&A.
Session 1 will provide an overview of AI basics, emphasizing generative AI and its prodigious appetite for money, power, data… and people.
Session 2 will examine the risks that undermine AI’s potential for good, including a sampling of “Are you kidding me?” moments.
Session 3 will cover trends such as “synthetic humanity” and debates about identity, intelligence, and consciousness.
The class begins just after the November election… so there will be an opportunity to discuss whether AI influenced the outcome! Terry will make lecture recordings available to class members for a limited time.
